I don’t get called gay politely and told that I’m perfectly okay whatever I am. I’m called a faggot, a queer, and a homo. If I was told “We think you’re gay, and that’s okay. We baked you a muffin basket” by my class, of course that wouldn’t be an insult.
I take offense to being called a faggot. It’s a derogatory term, meant to hurt or insult someone. Anyone, gay or straight would take offense to that, so your argument “that in itself is an indicator” is rather invalid.
